We know that a person’s career development is lifelong and involves multiple careers. As such, an individual will enter and re-enter the stages of change on numerous occasions. As part of offering career and employment services, we expect individuals to arrive to the process with ambivalence towards making changes. Motivational Interviewing is an empirically supported approach, which recognizes that when individuals are pressured to change they often become ambivalent. By embracing the spirit of motivational interviewing, we can think differently about change and recognize that clients who appear “stuck,” are not necessarily unmotivated. By applying this approach with clients, it empowers them to resolve their ambivalence toward change and allows them to draw on internal strengths and resources. This workshop provides participants with an introduction to Motivational Interviewing and includes interactive activities to appreciate the spirit and benefits of applying this approach within your practice.
